Australia TV Television

Commercial TV

There are three main commercial networks in Australia. These stations can be viewed for free:  

 

Seven Network                         http://au.tv.yahoo.com/tv/

Available in: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide

In Hobart and Darwin the station is known as Southern Cross

 

Nine Network                            http://channelnine.ninemsn.com.au/     

Available in: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Darwin

In Hobart the station is known as WIN 

 

Network Ten                            www.ten.com.au

Available in: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart

In Darwin the station is known as Southern Cross  

 

All commercial stations provide suitable entertainment for those on a budget. Various programs are broadcast including news and current affairs programs, movies, drama series, documentaries, children’s programs and other general interest programs.

Public Broadcasters

Australia has two national public broadcasters. These stations can be viewed for free.

 

ABC - Australian Broadcasting Corporation                         www.abc.net.au

Pay TV

Pay TV is a great option for those who like to watch TV and aren´t satisfied with Commercial TV stations.  

Pay TV can be expensive in Australia and users may be asked to sign contracts for extended periods of time. It is best to talk directly to each provider to see if these services fit within your budget and viewing requirements.  

Each provider will provide options for you to tailor the programs and channels you wish to subscribe to. The three major providers of Pay Television in Australia are:

Available in all captial cities except Hobart and Darwin

 

Optus Television                   www.optus.com.au

Only available in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide and where cable has been laid.

Newspapers

There are numerous national, state and local newspapers.  

It is recommended that you familiarise yourself with the major newspapers in your state as you may find them useful when you are looking for accommodation, event information, employment and general services.  

Printed newspapers in Australia are widely available in newsagencies, supermarkets, department stores, supermarkets and a range of other smaller retailers.
