ImageHome Phone - Land lines

In our experience, international students do not tend to connect a telephone at home which is often referred to as a “land line”, “home phone line” or “fixed line” in Australia. This is because the monthly rent can be expensive and usually you need to have a contract for at least 12 months.

We find that international students tend to rely on their mobile or cellular phones instead.

If you decide that you do want to connect the telephone in your house, you need to contact either Telstra or Optus as they are the two main telephone providers in Australia. To connect your phone you will need to fill in some forms and present your ID. Telstra or Optus can be contacted via phone or you can visit them directly as they have shops in most big shopping centres.

When you connect your telephone, they will usually charge you an installation fee and then you will be required to pay a monthly rental fee and obviously the costs of each call you make.
