Melbourne was selected as the most liveable city in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit in 2004. It is also called the "cultural and sporting capital of Australia" hosting every year the Australian Tennis Open, Grand Prix of Australia and several international film festivals. It is also one of the main economic and financial centres in Australia. Almost every big company in Australia has business operations in Melbourne. |

Melbourne is home to some of the nation's oldest and prestigious educational institutions. The University of Melbourne is the second oldest university in Australia. Melbourne's two largest and most prestigious tertiary institutions are the University of Melbourne and Monash University. Melbourne University ranked second among Australian universities in the 2006 THES international rankings, also includes three other Melbourne-based institutions in its top 100, Monash University, La Trobe University and RMIT University.
In Melbourne you will be able to find other important universities like Deakin University, Swinburne University of Technology , and Victoria University .
