Telephone Services (Mobile, Home, Prepaid and VoIP Phone)

International Students in Australia can access a variety of telephone service. A big percentage of students buy a mobile phone in Australia and use prepaid cards to make international calls. This section gives you a good idea of the services you can get in Australia. Just select one of the topics or navigate using the right-side menu.

Country and Area codes

Australia’s country code is +61 and each state in Australia has different area codes as follows:

  • New South Wales – 02

  • Canberra - 02

  • Victoria – 03

  • Queensland – 07

  • South Australia - 08

  • Western Australia - 08

  • Northern Territory - 08

  • Tasmania - 03

Therefore, if you lived in NSW and your friends and family wanted to call they would ring +612 and then your personal number (if they are ringing your mobile number, they would leave the 0 off at the start of your mobile number eg. +612 4………….)

 

Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS)

If you need assistance via the telephone in another language, TIS offers a range of services which are available 24 hours a day.

Telephone directories

Australia has two main telephone directories:

White pages – Use this directory if you are looking for a residential number or address or if you know the exact business name.

Yellow pages – Use this directory if you are looking for a business

 

Some states and cities have other smaller directories which are usually available for free at Australian Post Offices.

 

You can also ring for Directory Assistance from your home phone and sometimes from your mobile phone:
