In Australia, all international students need to obtain a student visa to be able to commence their studies in Australia.  In order to get a student visa you first need to receive an ‘Offer Letter’ from your institution. After receiving your offer letter, you can decide to accept it or not.

To accept your offer letter you will be asked to pay some or all of your course fees and send details to your institution . They will then confirm that you have accepted your offer and they will send you a ‘Confirmation of Enrolment’ letter which you then need to use to apply for your student visa.

You must obtain a student visa before you can commence your studies in Australia.

You can apply for your student visa through your agent or directly with an Australian Embassy in your country. The Australian Government will then evaluate your circumstances and will decide if they will grant you a student visa.

The process of getting a student visa varies according to your nationality and type of course you will study.  The process of applying for a visa is not very complicated but it could take some time (in some countries it can take a few months). We recommend you to contact the your closest Australian Embassy or Consulate and ask them for information according to your nationality and type of course.

You can also visit the website of the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs of Australia which contains detailed information about Student visas for Australia: http://www.immi.gov.au/students/

NOTE:People granted student visas on or after 26 April 2008 will receive permission to work with their visa grant.

If you have permission to work, you can work up to 20 hours per week while your course is in session and full time in the holidays. However, you cannot start work until you have commenced your course in Australia.
