2017 International Tuition Fees in Australia by State and Territory

In the past few years, we have observed Australian institutions implementing marketing and recruitment strategies which promote their specific state or territory as a potential study destination for international students in addition to the strategies focused on promoting Australian education as a whole.

During 2016, more than 300,000 international students enrolled in higher education programs in Australia. From this total, 35% of these students chose to study in New South Wales, 34% in Victoria, 14% in Queensland and 17% in other states and territories (Table 1).

For the past three years, Studymove has conducted a comprehensive analysis of international tuition fees in Australia. This study compares international tuition fees for all Australian universities and at all study levels. This year, we decided to conduct further analysis on international tuition fees by state and territory.

Based on our research, we have identified some important differences relating to the average international tution fees across all states and territories. The number of higher education providers in each state and territory and also the pricing strategy that each university has adopted have lead to some interesting observations.

1. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

Our analysis of more than 4,000 programs show that for undergraduate programs, the highest average annual tuition fee by state and territory is in Western Australia with an average annual fee of $30,491 for a Bachelor degree program followed closely by South Australia with an average annual fee of $30,127. Queensland is in an interesting position with one of the lowest average annual fees for undergraduate programs.

2. POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS

For postgraduate coursework programs, our analysis shows very different results with the Australian Capital Territory having the highest average annual tuition fee in 2017. New South Wales and Victoria follow with an average annual fee of $33,784 and $32,542 respectively. Queensland is in an interesting position again with one of the lowest average annual tuition fees for postgraduate coursework programs.

3. OUR REPORT

Our report provides a complete analysis of international fees from all 39 universities in Australia. The report is 90 pages long and includes detailed information including the average cost of undergraduate, postgraduate and study abroad programs for various fields of study from all universities.

This is the third year this analysis has been conducted. Using the results from last year, we were able to compare the 2017 international student tuition fees with 2016 fees and provide an additional analysis which illustrates the difference in fees between last year and this year.
