Benchmarking

Benchmarking is a well-established method of comparing data across different organizations in order to improve policy development, management and administration.  It is the process of measuring an organization's internal processes then identifying, understanding, and adapting outstanding practices from other organizations considered to be best-in-class.

 

It essentially identifies:

• What you are doing
• How you are doing it
• How others are doing it
• How well you are doing it compared to others and in reference to agreed measures
 
Benchmarking is extremely useful when comparing common business processes between institutions.  It allows participating institutions to gain unique insight into other similar organisations and/or competitor operations and gives them the information they need to measure their performance and adoption of strategies against the industry. 
 
The process of establishing accurate, comparable data across many indicators is a long-term process and it may take some years to ask the right questions to get the right data, for that reason it is best to work closely together with participating universities and commit to improving the project over time. 
 

What could be benchmarked?

Institutions may elect to benchmark any number and combination of areas/aspects including but not restricted to:
 
• Tracking the performance of Mobility Programs 
• International recruitment strategies 
• Program pricing 
• Program availability 
• International Alumni strategies
• Student services
 
 
  • Liaison with the institutions wishing to take part in the Benchmarketing exercise to develop a comprehensive instrument in order to benchmark the operation of participating universities in specific or more general areas.
  • Development of a document to capture relevant information for each participating university in order to obtain information to generate the benchmark report.
  • Collection of data and guidance throughout this process is given to participating institutions.
  • Analysis based on the information provided by each participating university in regards to the operation of each participating institutions office and their position among other institutions.
  • Production of a benchmark report for each participating university.

 

Confidentiality

  • All the information provided will be kept in the strictest confidence and will only be used to assist us in the development of the project. The information will only be shared with participating universities unless agreed otherwise.

 

 

CURRENT BENCHMARKING PROJECTS

 

International learning mobility benchmark report - The Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA), (USA)

Years project conducted: 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017

Studymove has been working with 13 member universities of The Big Ten Academic Alliance in conducting a benchmark exercise focused on international learning mobility activities. The project is now in its fifth year.

The goal of this study is to develop a yearly report that contains detailed information about the international mobility strategies implemented by BTAA member universities. The study aims to go beyond the annual data reported for the IIE Open Doors survey to create an additional set of institutional data to support program management and policy decisions.

Specifically, the objective is to capture the entire scope of international learning mobility activities supported by member institutions including non-credit activities, international student participation, and other key policy-related data. Thirteen BTAA member universities are currently participating in the benchmark study. 

 

International Education Benchmark for New Zealand

Years project conducted: 2016,2017

Studymove is honoured to be chosen to conduct an annual comprehensive international education benchmark with Education New Zealand and all eight New Zealand universities. The Benchmark focuses on all aspects of international student recruitment and on international student mobility. This analysis supports the development of international education strategies for all New Zealand universities and assists in the creation of government policies in the future. This project delivers insightful and useful information to all participants and assists the international education industry in New Zealand to continue to grow.

 

International Mobility Benchmark

Years project conducted: 2016, 2017 in progress. 

This study is the first high-level attempt to take a snapshot of short-term international learning mobility strategies at a global level. 
 
The aim of the study is to provide a comparative analysis among top internationally-driven higher education institutions for several regions around the globe. In addition, to understand the different environments in which each institution is immersed as a result of specific government policies, support and cultural aspects in each country. 
 
The study provides a useful tool to facilitate peer learning activities among the participating institutions. Participating universities are invited to participate in an International Consortium of Universities that shares the information to enhance their current and future international learning mobility strategies. 
 
Seven large international universities participated in the study in 2016 and we expect more universities to participate in 2017:
  • The University of Auckland – New Zealand
  • The University of Melbourne – Australia
  • The University of Minnesota - USA
  • Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore - Italy
  • University of Copenhagen – Denmark
  • University of Glasgow - UK
  • University College Dublin - Ireland
